Roots trace back to the support of Reunity, formerly the Pan-African Women's Philanthropy Network.
2011
Dr. Jacqueline Copeland founded Black Philanthropy Month, launching globally with its first official summit — commemorating the United Nations International Year and Decade for People of African Descent.
2024
Dr. Copeland named Floyd Jones as Global Chair, opening a bold new chapter for the movement.
2025 - today
Stewarded by BackBlack, the movement has mobilized over $11.5M to Black-led organizations and continues to expand its global footprint.

It was founded by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland and belongs to the many organizations and people who celebrate it. Day-to-day operations are managed by BackBlack, with Floyd Jones serving as Global Chair.

August is the movement's annual moment of celebration, but funding, support, and the nonprofit directory are active year-round. We believe in and encourage year-round investment — Black communities deserve more than a month of attention, and real, systemic change takes sustained commitment all year.
